Elaine on verge of US breakthrough
Thursday April 10 2008
Independent.ie
JONATHAN Rhys Meyers may no longer be the only Irish actor heating up American TV screens – actress Elaine Cassidy looks set to make her mark in a new US television drama.
The talented actress, who is from Co Wicklow, first made her mark in the controversial drama, Felicia's Journey, at the age of 18.
And now Elaine (28) looks to be on the brink of a major US breakthrough after landing the lead role in a new CBS drama, Harper's Island.
Currently shooting in Canada, the drama is set around a group of friends who gather on an island near Seattle for a wedding.
All Saints actress Samantha Noble is to play the role of the bride, while Elaine takes the role of childhood friend of the groom.
Speaking to the Evening Herald, the actress dismissed praise for her success.
“There's no point over the last 10 years where I've felt like I've made it,” she said.
“To be honest I hope that I feel like that until the day that I die, because if I think I've done it all, I'll have to stop acting altogether.”
And while the glamour of Hollywood may soon be hers for the taking, her first steps into showbusiness were considerably less glitzy.
Rather than undergo hours of preparation for her first big audition – for the 1999 film, Felicia's Journey – Elaine had to fit in a Leaving Cert exam before she could run to impress the casting directors.
“For the auditions of Felicia's Journey I had to leave my Leaving Cert business study exam early,” she recalled.
“I had my top on for the audition underneath my uniform, because we had to wear our uniforms, and I had to get a note from my mum to explain why I was going.”
