NOW FOR TWO WITH NERVE - BRIEF ARTICLE
ELAINE CASSIDY
For actress Elaine Cassidy, playing naive and old-fashioned Felicia in Atom Egoyan's Felicia's Journey was a leap. The film, based on a William Trevor novel, is about a pregnant Irish girl who goes searching for her caddish boyfriend in present-day England--only to fall in with a genial psychopath. "At first, Felicia was difficult for me to grasp," Cassidy admits in her lilting brogue. "She seemed a bit of a doormat. But then I began to understand where she's coming from. Her innocence is what gets her into trouble, but it's also what saves her." Cassidy immersed herself in Irish history and in Trevor's fiction to feel the heartbeat of a girl who evolves subtly from victim to survivor. The actress, who grew up near Dublin and who had appeared in one previous film, may be more savvy than Felicia, but she shares her proud incorruptibility. There are stories of Cassidy returning car fare and clearing dishes after lunch on the film's set. The realistic nineteen-year-old even keeps her job in data entry in Dublin because, as she says, "It's nice to come back to normalcy."
