The Back Story
It was an Autumn night in May 2005 and the much anticipated second-coming from Sarah Waters (Tipping the Velvet), Fingersmith was going to air on Australia’s ABC network. I’d read the book. Loved it. I saw the trailer and to be honest, wasn’t that fussed, but thought I’d give it a go since I wasn’t that fussed with the trailer for Tipping the Velvet either and ended up quite enjoying it. I saw bits of the first episode of Fingersmith and still wasn’t taken by it; and probably the reason I only saw bits of it. I kept distracting myself from actually watching it.
The next episode was to air on the Wednesday of that following week and since I hadn’t fully watched it, I thought I best sit down and watch it from start to finish. So I did. All of a sudden this unknown (to me, although I’d watched The Others, I’m sad to say I never really noticed Elaine in it) actress absolutely captivated me. Her formidable acting skills; her beautiful character transformation of Maud Lilly; her pure, raw emotion and all the small details she put into her performance just flawed me. I was mesmerised and completely fascinated by her. I ended up enjoying that first episode and the two subsequent ones after.
So, who was she? Time to throw that question at Aunty Google to see what she’d come up with …
There wasn’t much info out there on Elaine at the time, nor many images available, but I stumbled on www.elainecassidy.com. The original one. It was purple and white and the main image was this one …
Original Elaine Cassidy Site
The site was run by a guy called Richard and although there wasn’t much on it, it had the most up-to-date and comprehensive info out there on Elaine. I hung on it like a moth to a flame waiting to see what else she was going to be in.
I got up one morning to check the site and much to my shock it was gone. So once again, it was Aunty Google to the rescue for some advice on the matter and I came across a Yahoo Group (remember those ladies and gents?) that Richard had started which detailed what had happened to the site. For some reason the domain had lapsed and it got shut down, so he bought www.elainecassidy.co.uk and started all over again. On the Yahoo Group he asked if anyone did any website design and if so, could they lend a helping hand, so I put up my hand since I’d dabbled a bit for my degree and wanted to get more into it. So I started the process of re-designing the whole website while he worked on a new forum. After a few months of hard graft, we finally had a website with a bit more info to fill it, some images to give it colour and pizazz and a brand spanking new forum where all the Elaine fans could go and
gush over her share their mutual fondness for this little Irish pocket rocket.
Unfortunately a few bad apples spoiled the bunch and Richard ended up being the centre of a silly little comment the apples took badly. Not long after the “forum incident”, Richard quietly exited stage left one day without so much as an ‘I love EC’. I never heard from him again … and still haven’t.
So What Next?
The site was again gone, the forum closed and the Yahoo Group shut down. All my hard work = a big fat zero. The elainecassidy.com domain was in limbo, Richard had a hold of elainecassidy.co.uk for another few years and elainecassidy.net was taken by a new fan who had created a website in the meantime.
All the good stuff was taken, so the next best thing? www.love-n-lemons.com. The iconic catchphrase Elaine uses on 99.99% of her autographs. First point of call was to start up a new Yahoo Group so all the fans could
gush over her catch up on the latest EC site news, acquire the Love ‘n’ Lemons domain and begin working on a new site.
The Yahoo Group banner looked like this …

Birth of a New Site
On 30 July 2005, Love ‘n’ Lemons was born and although it changed to The Elaine Cassidy Site, it has been here ever since and as far as I know, the longest running site dedicated to Elaine. This year we will celebrate 10 years of Elaine Cassidy goodness and I hope to celebrate as many decades as Elaine will have us.

We’ve had a few domain name changes over the years and a few costume changes as well and thank noogies for that. My how design has changed!! When I bought love-n-lemons.com, I also put in a bid of interest for the elainecassidy.com domain and luckily, I won. I also, over the last few years managed to buy elainecassidy.co.uk and elainecassidy.net.
Although we were elainecassidy.co.uk for a while, we’re happy to now be back home on our beloved elainecassidy.com.
Birth of a New EC Era
So here we are, with a brand spanking new design … again. Times have changed and we must roll with them. It’s all about being mobile and The Elaine Cassidy Site is certainly that. It’s responsive and
should will work nicely on all devices. Since I don’t have all devices at my disposal, please feel free to contact me with any fixes you might require for your device and I’ll try and sort it out for you.
